DDP Shipping from China: What Buyers Should Know

Illustration of an adviser discussing a destination delivery arrangement with a small business owner

DDP can place more delivery work on the seller, including import clearance and applicable duties. Before accepting it, confirm the exact destination, the seller’s ability to complete the arrangement, the import roles, documents and any exclusions. “All included” is a starting question, not a complete explanation.

A supplier offers one price to deliver your order to your address. For a small business without a logistics team, that sounds attractive. You can focus on the product while someone else coordinates the route.

The convenience is useful only when the arrangement is clear. This guide focuses on the questions behind a DDP offer, so you can understand what the seller is promising and what still requires your attention.

Know what DDP describes

Under Incoterms® 2020 DDP, the seller arranges delivery to the agreed destination and handles export, transit and import formalities, including applicable duties and taxes. Delivery and risk transfer occur there with the goods ready for unloading.

DDP can be used for different transport modes. It does not decide your product specification or payment stages. Keep those terms in the order agreement rather than expecting the delivery term to cover the whole transaction.

Name the actual destination and receiving conditions

Specify the complete delivery point and the rules version agreed in the sale. A country or city alone does not tell the seller whether delivery is to a port warehouse, business address or fulfilment centre.

Tell the seller about appointments, opening hours, access restrictions and unloading needs. DDP generally leaves unloading to the buyer; clarify the transport contract’s included unloading charges and any special service separately.

Ask how the seller will complete import clearance

A foreign seller may face practical or regulatory difficulty handling destination import formalities. Ask which entity will act as importer of record, which broker will handle the entry and how the proposed setup will work lawfully.

The DDP label does not itself establish those roles. Have the responsible broker clarify them for the shipment. If your business is named as importer, understand the obligations that follow; do not assume the seller’s commercial promise removes your statutory responsibilities.

Turn the all-in price into a written scope

Ask whether the price covers collection, origin handling, main transport, clearance, applicable import charges and final delivery to the stated point. Get a list of exclusions and the basis for any charges that may change.

Discuss what happens if the final packed size differs, the delivery address changes or the cargo requires examination or storage. An exclusion may change the commercial arrangement; clarify it rather than assuming the DDP description settles every exception.

Ask which shipment and entry records you will receive

Confirm the commercial invoice, packing list, transport reference and the import records available to the relevant parties. Ask how your goods will remain identifiable if the service uses consolidation.

Good visibility helps with stock records and questions after arrival. Avoid an arrangement that cannot explain the goods description, declared value or responsible importing entity. Accurate information matters even when another party coordinates the transport.

Compare DDP with a workable alternative

A DAP arrangement may put delivery transport on the seller while leaving import clearance and related charges with the buyer. Another option may use your own freight provider for part of the route.

Compare the actual responsibilities and total expected cost. If the seller cannot perform the proposed DDP import arrangement, discuss a term it can perform with a clear destination-side plan. Simplicity should come from competent coordination, not an unexplained clearance method.

Keep product checks and shipment release separate

A convenient delivery service does not prove the goods meet your specification. Confirm quality checks, corrections, quantities and packing before release. Agree how payment stages relate to the evidence.

Also discuss what to do if delivery is late or cartons arrive damaged. Keep the contact, reporting procedure and shipment records available. The delivery term is one part of that practical response.

An example: a fulfilment address with extra conditions

Imagine a small brand accepts a DDP offer for stock going to a U.S. fulfilment warehouse. The quote names the building, but no one confirms appointment requirements or pallet labels. This is a hypothetical example.

Even with transport arranged, the handover can fail if the receiving requirements are missing. Send the warehouse’s current instructions before packing and have the seller confirm which services and documents its delivery provider will supply.

Bryan's view

I would ask a supplier to explain the DDP plan in ordinary language: who clears the goods, who pays each charge and who makes the final delivery. GCB can help coordinate factory information and clarify the China-side handover. The destination import setup should be confirmed by the responsible qualified provider.

Questions buyers often ask

Does DDP include import duties?

Under the agreed Incoterms® 2020 DDP rule, the seller handles applicable import duties and taxes. Check that the actual quote and arrangement match that promise.

Does DDP include unloading?

The buyer generally bears unloading responsibility. Clarify the transport contract’s charges and any requested unloading service.

Can any Chinese supplier provide DDP?

Do not assume so. Ask how the seller will lawfully perform the destination clearance and delivery.

Does DDP mean I have no import responsibilities?

The commercial term does not override statutory obligations. Confirm the importer of record and your role with the responsible broker.

Is DDP the same as door-to-door?

Door-to-door describes a delivery scope without necessarily settling import clearance and duties. Ask for the actual agreed term and responsibilities.

What if the supplier cannot explain its import arrangement?

Resolve the gap before accepting the offer. Discuss an alternative with clear roles rather than relying on an unexplained all-in claim.
